Surprising Sluggish performance almost leads to dropped points
The St Francis girls opened the 2016/17 season with an away fixture against Widbrook Amazons.
After the really promising performances against last seasons league winners and runners up in the preceding friendly matches this was a game that on paper St Francis should have won comfortably.
Maybe it was the thought that they were playing supposedly easier opponents but whatever it was the St Francis girls started the game really slowly with no energy or 'buzz' about them. Widbrook took full advantage and put St Francis under early pressure and it was no surprise when they took the lead deservedly about 10 miutes into the game. The goal failed to stir the St Francis girls as they almost conceeded a second goal a few minutes later.
Following a blast fro the coaches, the St Francis girls started to get the game under control and the action moved more to the Widbrook goal. Chances came and went with the home keeper making a couple of saves and a number of shots flashing just wide of goal before St Francis got a lucky break when a Widbrook defender inexplicably handled the ball to gift St Francis a penalty from which Emma Simpson scored to make the half time score 1-1
